Biography:
The Clauberg Opera formed in
the winter of 2002 on the Bransholme Estate in
north east England, intent on creating a new kind
of punk band. They wanted to soundtrack life on
a council estate in a new way. They grew up absorbing
the influence of both their surroundings and many
different types of music, from The Cure, Killing
Joke and The Pogues to Skinnyman, Oasis and Crass.
The resultant sound is definitely progressive,
but retains punk spirit and a rock 'n' roll swagger.
Though experimental in kind, it takes its cue
from the heart as well as the head.
The
first recorded output appeared in 2004, entitled
'The Death Of This City'. This five-track EP was
written and recorded according to the Dogme 95
Manifesto, a film movement based in Denmark. The
band was the first to attempt such a feat. A second
EP followed in the summer of 2006. At seven tracks
long, 'Build The Abomination' marked the fourth
year of the band's existence.
Fully realising their punk roots yet retaining
a dark progressive edge, it was another foray
into unknown musical territories. After debuting
three tracks on their Myspace, Neurosis frontman
Steve Von Till was moved to praise their "heavy
psyche", while the first live airings of
these songs resulted in one journalist claiming
the band have "the power to temporarily disrupt
the wakeful beta state".
Towards the end of 2006 the band signed to Sound
Devastation Records alongside such notables as
Flatlands, From The Sky, The Pirate Ship Quintet,
Monster Killed By Laser and Sunshine Republic.
They took to the studio to write and record their
debut album, expected for release in summer 2007.
